The best Monday of the year

Twelve years of scramble golf, one very good cause.

It started in August 2015 with 24 friends, six teams and a straight scramble at Crosswinds. A dozen summers later it’s a 27-hole day that fills 33 teams, with a lunch break in the middle and a putting contest that never stops raising money.

Two flights keep it fun for everybody: the Champions Cup for the competitive crowd, and the John Daly Cup for the ones who’re mostly there for the company.

History

  1. RC1 · Aug 10

The inaugural Randy Classic: 24 golfers, six teams, a 7:30 AM first tee and a 25-pound marble eagle for the winners.

  2. RC2 · Aug 22

Back to Crosswinds for 36 holes. About 26 golfers, a $100 all-in price and a 7 AM first tee.

  3. RC3 · Aug 14

Nine teams and shotgun starts at 8:05 AM and 1:39 PM, with a buffet lunch in between and payouts for the front 18, back 18 and the full 36.

  4. RC4 · Aug 20

Booked for the third Monday of August again, back at Crosswinds for 36 holes.

  5. RC5 · Aug 19

36 holes again, with golfers building their own teams.

  6. RC6 · Aug 24

96 “socially distanced” golfers showed up in a year when little else was happening.

  7. RC7 · Aug 23

Hurricane Henri was dodged, the format moved to 27 holes, and two teams tied at 17 under for a three-hole playoff. Over $3,000 raised.

  8. RC8 · Aug 22

Rained out an hour in. A last-minute putting contest, side donations and a full clubhouse still raised a little over $3,000.

  9. RC9 · Aug 21

A limited run of RC9 shirts, with every dollar going to charity.

  10. RC10 · Aug 19

The tenth annual: 26 groups, a staggered 7:30 to 8:30 start, RCX shirts and four charities on the card.

  11. RC11 · Aug 18

The eleventh annual. The course capped the field at 30 teams and the entry list filled up.

  12. RC12 · Aug 17

A record 33 teams (17 Champions Cup, 16 John Daly Cup), the third record in a row.
